View Full Version : Newbie Q: my CDs have less high freqs??
Hello- I'm new to the world of CD burning, though not computer music in general... I have a question: I'm using MLCD, Yamaha 400, Q650 Mac. I make an image file of one of my pieces, it burns succesfully at either 2x or 4x. But the sound seems rolled off in the highs when played back on various CD players around the studio/house... not a lot but noticeable to me. When burned at 4x, the mid-bass seems heavier than 2x and there is a softening of the highs. I understand there are many factors at play here, but wondered if anyone had some experience with this situation.
Thanks, John

Make sure you doont have the emphasis flag set in MLCD or this will most certainly roll off the highs
Also different media can playback different on different players.
Bad quality copies usually end up sounding BRIGHTER than the original due to the error correction guessing the waveform and inserting strange values that are near but not correct.
I use a Yamaha CDR400 for CD master production most of which is done at EMI Holland or Sony DADC Austria my clients choose these plants because of their reputation for quality and therefore will also closely examine the listening copies I send to them. Due to schedules or run leingths I may make an image file and burn at 4X or just run off 3 copies at 2X, in the last 12 months neither I nor my clients have noticed any diference in sound between 4X or 2X or the backup DAT's
Maybee there is some problem in the hardware you're using, or in the CDR blanks

John,
Check out the Digital Domain homepage at

- there are some interesting opinions about this (degradation due to recording speed) although so far I have to agree with Joules - I don't hear it!
