Hello all,
Tomorrow is delivery day for our ICON. We are an independent studio with a main tracking room that does primarily music recording and a second all digital suite for editing, mixing surround, etc.... Now I'm sure several of you will consider me crazy, but after much analysis, the ICON is going into our main room in place of a 30 year old NEVE 8048 console. For a number of years now, I've watched our clients (many of which are mainstream major artists, producers, and engineers) using only TWO faders on the NEVE most of the time, except during tracking dates, where only the Neve's MIC Pre's were in use and maybe a few of the groups....that's it! Not even headphone cues on the NEVE were used since we have numerous individual headphone mix stations for the players to setup their own headphone mixes...Ultimately, the key issue became the fact that a classic, vintage board requires a full-time tech and repeated upkeep...otherwise, as a major producer once told me...'vintage just becomes an old dinosaur'....since we can no longer afford a full-time tech and to keep pouring truly unknown amounts of money into our vintage friend, it became essential that we move forward in a new direction that would be dependable, easier to maintain, and forwarding looking....
I personally have been mixing in the PT box for several years, ever since PT-HD...and nearly all the clients that visit our facility do so as well...so why shouldn't I want to pick up some mixing business by having the ICON? People haven't mixed here for years, we had become ONLY a tracking facility...Besides, I'm not selling off the NEVE just yet...by racking up the MIC PRE's I keep everyone who has chosen to come here for tracking over the nearly 30 years we have been in business very happy and now I have to just maintain 32 vintage modules not over 200...see my point?
Well...I'll let you all know how things go over the next few weeks...we should be totally back on line by mid-October...there will be some in-house sessions before that, and small odds and ends...but all the PRE's and re-wiring won't be finished until October 10th...
Feel free to air out any ideas, suggestions, and thoughts as I venture into this...I'd love to hear from many of you. By the way, if I don't respond promptly to posts to this thread, please don't get offended. As you might expect, I'm a tad busy bringing my studio back on-line, and learning how to use the ICON....and try not to nail me toooooo hard about (sort of) retiring the old NEVE....
Just thought you all should know...yes....there are other music installations that are putting their money behind this technology...and by the way...we paid full-price and are not a pro audio equipment seller (except an occassional EBAY sale) or Digidesign PT dealer!

PS.. NEW web site, pictures, brochures etc...all in process...but you can see the old 70's lava lamp retro look of the pre ICON control room on-line...needless to say...we also renovated the control room to prepare for the ICON....

Good luck, Dom. Do you ever use the Neve as a summing box (faders set to zero)?

Well everyone... I finally have a chance to get back to this forum and update our progress. I've got to say that everybody involved with this transaction (Susan Wheeler, Karla Diehl, and Rick Santizo from GCPRO), and the installation of the ICON (Michael Vangen, Rich Nevens, and Tom Graham from Digi) have been truly phenomenal and very helpful about everything. A special thanks to my mentor and the 'guide'/designer/instigator of this whole effort, Tony Shepperd...T, without your help, constant vigilance and reassurance I would have never attempted the control room renovation.
We've now completed all our patchbays, and by tomorrow evening we'll have 50 mic pre's (most of which are from our old Neve board) ready to go...best of all, on Monday we get back to work!
Everything looks great, works properly, and best of all SOUNDS GREAT! Right around now, I'm happy that we waited as long as we did to do the renovation to our main room...we are truly setup with the best of the classic tracking signal path and outboard gear, and a modern, comprehensive work surface that offers flexibility and functionality....
I know I'm starting to sound like an ad for Digi...but things are 'sweet'......I still need to do a really big, full out music tracking date, but after working with Rick S. from GCPRO and developing a cool template that takes advantage of the custom faders feature to create an audio flow from ProToolsHD into my Furman HDS-16 personal monitoring boxes with output metering of the combines I'm sending the 16 channel Furman distro right on the ICON...I know it will be a 'no-brainer' and easier than how I used to work on my Neve...right now I'm more confident about the changeover than ever...
So, what's next is my attention to the web site update and pictures I promised...so be patient and you'll see why I'm getting really happy about my room.....all I need now is for the poor guys in Florida to recover from the hurricane(s) so I can get my speaker stands for the Air25's....

Looks good. May I suggest that you configure the modules so that you have the 32 faders all together and the Master section on the right. That way you have a bucket of faders in the sweet spot. I'm good friends with Hank Sanicola at O'henry studios and he had his console set up like yours in the beginning and mentioned to me that clients complained about there being no faders in the center. It's kind of a pain to keep rolling across either side of the Master section to reach faders. The EQ and Dynamics panels will still be in easy reach to the right, and for intensive editing a little scoot to the right is all it takes to get centered on the keyboard. Having the keyboard to the right also makes it easier if you're working with a dedicated Pro Tools operator. Let's the Engineer be in the center and the editor to the right. Just a suggestion from someone who's used the console for a while.

Hello again all,
Just a quick update....Things are completely up and running, and we have done several large tracking dates by now. So far, the ICON has proven very adaptable, and the work surface has proven extremely conducive to the work flow....up to now our reputation in the mainstream industry has been as a tracking facility, and fortunately, the ICON has 'enhanced' our ability. True...without our wall of classic NEVE modules we could not maintain or accomplish this....but the combination of the NEVE's, the ICON, and our Furman headphone cue system makes it ideal....The only thing I've got to build now are some NEVE summing units for the minimal amount of grouping that engineers usually prefer (several mics on the Kick, Snare, Guitars...etc)...
Up next is a month long major label, large tracking project...which we set up yesterday, and initial indications are very positive. Now...I'm looking for some mix work...I've got to get a pay-back for all those plug-ins, expansion chassis, and extra DSP cards I purchased....I'm Booking mid-March '05...anyone need to mix?
Here's an early Happy Thanksgiving to all...

PS There ARE two gotcha's so far...both small...Believe it or not...the sonic quality of the 'talkback' system on the ICON really needs improvement....AND...we all need a solution for locating our near field monitors...the ICON just does not have an easy means for mounting them anywhere close to where we are used to having them...ANY IDEAS?...this is especially true in my situation where the ICON is up a bit on a pedestal...(final pictures about ready!!!)

I had a custom overbridge constructed out of some nice Oak wood that is the length of the console (32 fader), about 18" deep, with a shelf that is hidden by the metal panel that is under the console (the mesh-looking metal job that goes from leg to leg). It works great and looks great, and the cords, cables and NS-10 amp sits on the shelf nicely and can't be seen. The outer legs of the overbridge are just inside of the Icon legs, and there are two more legs on the inside of it (so 4 in total) for stability.

I first tried the Sound Anchors but couldn't get them close enough for my preferences and still needed a place for the NS10's...So my buddy who's good at building cabinets and such whipped me up something for a meger $250 buckeroos :P

I'll snap some pix next week and email them to you if you wish, email me at iproduce@bellsouth.net if you are interested.

One more report...
Thank you to the person from O'Henry's for the suggestion on reconfiguring the ICON to have the faders all grouped together. In our particular situation, SBSD is an engineer/producer owned and run facility and when I work, I do not use a PT operator, so I like having the screen in the center of the board. HOWEVER, right now we are completing a month long tracking project for Atlantic with Jim Scott producing (Jim has told me several times how pleased he is with the facility and the results he's getting, so do not fear using an ICON in a tracking studio!!! just be sure to have plenty of great outboard mic-pre's and some grouping capability before going into PT-HD...and a separate headphone monitoring system for each performer also helps).

Jim chooses to use Chris Holmes as his assistant engineer/PT operator, but Jim also wants to be in the center/sweet spot when running the session. SO...considering all this what we ended up doing is running a 2nd keyboard/trackball and a 2nd monitor off to the side of the ICON for Chris. This allowed Jim to sit at the ICON, and see what Chris was doing while Jim sat in the middle of the session. He could easily run the session, and at the same time access the faders/solo's/mutes etc....exactly as he has been used to doing throughout his renowned career....on more traditional consoles and mixing boards.....

Fortunately, Apple G5's have plenty of screen I/O and USB ports running dual monitors and keybaords in a Mirroring fashion without any issues. Either keyboard/mouse can equally control PT-HD, and both screens reflect what is happening at all times....also the artist was very comfortable sitting down at the ICON and grabbing the occassional fader, etc. to demonstrate any ideas he had about the music....

All in all....it works!

Signing off....
