I was wondering how the I/O of the ICON system works. I believe it's the same HD Accel Mixing Core but how would I go about getting 80 inputs. Could I get 3 192 I/O with an extra 192 AD Expansion Card in them ? And then connect each of them to each Accel Mixing Core Card (I'm going to get the HD 3 Core)? Also, I know this may sound weird. but there be away to set-up my system where it's about 5 systems (one for Sound FX, one for Music, one for ADR, one for Dialogue, and one Foley.). Could I have it set-up where I can have these 5systems act as one board. And then sometimes have them act as individual boards. So I can mix stuff down in with in there own groups (Like mix music down, then combine it with the others after.). This way i could do M & E mixes easier. Or should I not bother with that I just get one big board?

Your advice and Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Andrew

Andrew,

The I/O on the ICON is whatever you want to configure in Pro Tools. Check the configurations options to see what combinations you could work out. The question that comes to mind is, why do you need 80 inputs? Considering that the ICON is designed to work with Pro Tools, I would think that most of your sources are going to be Pro Tools tracks. Not to say that in your situation you might need that many external sources (aux inputs, mics for an orchestra/live band recording), but if that's the case, you might be better off with a more traditional console. What's your application? If you're doing post, are you bringing in a bunch of tracks from MMP's? Time to bring 'em into Pro Tools! Otherwise, you'll be missing out on a lot of the advantages that using an ICON will bring.

This is for Post Production, I'm bring in audio straight from external devies, like CD Players, Mics, VTRs, ect. I want about 16 channels for ADR/ Dialogue (I'd rather have extra then need'em later.). 16 Channels for music. Upto 32 channels for Sound FX and 16 channels for Foley. I know It may sound like an over blown system but I'm going to be mixing Feature Films on it.

Your dialog, ADR, SFX and Foley will almost certainly be in Pro Tools sessions, so you won't need actual physical inputs for those. Your music will probably be in Pro Tools sessions also, but may be more likely to be at a different sample rate, so you may need physical aux inputs to bring it into the mix.

Sounds like you are planning to use the ICON (actually D-control) as a traditional mixer and bring in external sources (other Pro Tools systems?) going out to external recorders. Nothing wrong with this of course, but doesn't seem to be the most efficient use of the technological capabilities available. Mixing in-the-box is the way to go...

BTW, to answer your original question, you can have 96 simultaneous I/O of whatever flavor you prefer in an ICON system.

Around how much would one of these systems cost ?
