M-powered huuuge latency problem!!!

I've been using the TDM for a while in the studio and nuendo at home with an MOTU 828mkII.
I decided to switch to PT M-powered and the M-Audio 1814, because it seemed like a good idea.
Unfortunately I have a huge problem with latency! at H/W buffersize 512kb, the latency is like a really bad slap back echo! Trying to decrease the buffer size only creates other problems i.e. pops, halts etc.
Does anyone else have this problem? How do you solve it? I was hoping to have a recording monitor option which turned off monitoring while recording and on while in playback. But this option doesn't excist right?
Any input would be great!! I'm in a bind!

You can use the M-Audio mixer and assign an input be monitored.

I'm running a Dual G5 2.0 with H/W buffer at 256 with unnoticeable latency. I agree that 512 is a different story. Can you give us more setup specs? Even with a G4, you'd be able to produce the same results. By the way, are you monitoring through Pro tools or an exterior mixer? You can also use the M-Audio mixer as danhops expressed...
