I'm currently using Eleven on a 14 day rental and comparing it to a few other amp sim plugins, mainly GuitarRig 3, Amplitube 2, GTR3, and Softube's Vintage Amp Room. From what I've read and what it sounds like I'm very impressed with the lengths Digi went to make Eleven sound and feel like the vintage amps it's modeling.
When I A/B Eleven with any of the other amp sims it definitely sounds more real, almost exactly like an amp with a mic in front of it but somehow I can't help but wondering if it's realism is almost a drawback. What I mean by that is the guitar sounds we are used to hearing on records are rarely a mono track of a mic in front of amp but are usually more along the lines of a double or quadruple tracked guitar with panning hard left and right with the fourth track out of phase or combinations of multiple mics some right on the speaker and others further back to capture room ambiance on multiple different tracks to be adjusted at mix down or whatever other things the engineer can think of.
Now don't get me wrong, I love the simplistic nature of Eleven and it focusing on just trying to emulate amps as accurately as possibly. I think some of the other sims, especially Guitar Rig, try to recreate the above mentioned recording techniques for you and it creates an initial impression of it sounding more like a guitar on a record. And since many people are looking for the way to get to that point as quickly as possible with amp sims, there is some appeal in that.
I wonder if anyone else has noticed this and if anyone has suggestions for using Eleven with other plugins or in virtual multi amp setups that sound great. For instance I would love to know what the setup was for the new demos on the web site as they sound significantly better than the old ones and to my ears must have incorporated some mixing techniques as well as reverbs and delays to get very real recorded guitar sounds out of a plugin.
Thanks in advance for any input or tips on using Eleven.
