I bought Gtr solo last summer for 'bout $130.
It runs on 5.9.6.1. I upgraded all my waves plugs to v 6.0, but if I don't keep 5.9.6.1 in my plug-ins folder, solo will not work.
As an owner of solo, the upgrade to GTR3 dropped to $40 (software only).
I think it was about a $240 upgrade before this 'one year trial' was announced.
It's a great way to add some stomp-boxes to Eleven :D

Man, I logged on to post this news and found the thread.
I've been using Line6 Gearbox ($99) for months; not perfect, but pretty handy, especially for writing. (Sometimes, by the time your amp's on, your effects are lined up, etc., you've lost the mood.) Great for a quick electric track that's in the background. Heck, I've tweaked up some up-frnt tracks and been happy.
If you have a cheap bass and you track bass until a "real" bass player can finish your song, the Gearbox really gets a nice bass sound from a crap bass. Pretty amazing. Won't replace the real thing, but very useful.
Comparing Line 6 to Waves:
Just in the few days I've used it, I'll say GTR sounds better. It's subtle, but the amp sounds are nice for my needs. There's an "airiness" that sounds more like a mic'd cab. The GTR sound "inspired" me more, and does it faster. A lot less tweaking to get to "hell yeah", and GTR's hell yeah is all caps.
Money can't buy that feeling; you sat down to track a small part and an hour later you're still writing because it sounds great in the mix. For the song I was on last night, I was just grinning.
Line 6 has a lot more options, effects and control. Almost overwhelming. Stuff like slow gear, modulators, etc - if you're into freaky sounds, it'll keep you up late.
Either of these is damn sweet if you need chorus on a vocal or other track and don't have an RTAS chorus. Amp and cab sims are handy for drum tracks. Line 6 has some vocal pre, mic position and room sound sims that aren't amazing but work well on some things. GTR Solo, not so much.
Both are nice for re-amping. I don't use re-amping hardware, either. Google up Craig Anderton's take on coming from an aux out into your amp. Works fine.
Both will work as free-standing apps (the GTR even works with the Line6 interface - there's slight but noticeable latency with the GTR through the line6 box, none with the line6 software).
THIS IS WHAT I LOVE ABOUT 'EM BOTH. Want to get better at guitar, or challenge yourself? Launch iTunes and pick a web radio station. (I like Jazz or Ambient channels since I don't write or play much of that). Promise yourself you will jam along for x-minutes (say, a half hour). Launch either guitar app. Give yourself a few seconds to get a sound that suits whatever is playing. Then do solos, countermelodies, rhythms to whatever comes up. No changing songs. Make yourself stretch to fit. - it's time well spent. Hell, who practices enough? Either of these products make practicing fun and exciting.
I came up with the most kick-butt Arabic-sounding progression playing along with some Persian pop. I just launched Audacity and hit "record" so I'd remember it, now I'm working it into a new tune. It's nice to have a fast source of inspiration (that I can use with headphones or blasted through my monitors).
Free for a year? Run, don't walk.

I downloaded it on my current computer. I love it.
My question is, I am getting the new Mac pro (whenever it comes out) which will be my main recording computer so can I download the Guitar solo plugin again next month with my new computer, how long does this offer last?

as someone who has a pod xt, a handful of tube amps, (bogner, fender, mesa) eleven and now waves solo free... i gotta say... i really like the gtr solo... I just got gtr and eleven, but... so far.. i like waves more than eleven. eleven has a funny overtone or oversound if you will.. its like the signal, but not as distorted as the bulk of the signal... (if that makes any sense at all..) it sounds like 2 amps, 1 what i want, and one kinda funky... that doesn't sound natural to me.... whereas waves gtr, is one cohesive sound, much more natural... plus, waves has all the stompboxes! which I love... since,.... my tubescreamers don't sound as natural in front of these amps as they do in front of a real amp, but the waves models work well, and with the desired effect... Eleven is great, I like it alot.. but I gotta say... I'll be surprised if i don't buy gtr when my 1year free expires...

The GTR plug is a great amp sim. I feel its the best on the market. The neil cintron mods sit PERFECT in a mix.
Quick question ... you do need to have an iLok in order for this FREE plug-in to work ... don't you?

Yes, I think you do....and I thought you had to be running waves to use it too. Can someone clarify this?

The website is a little vague about this, it looks like if you do have Waves on your system it must V6. I do believe its ilok. All of my Waves is.

To quote myself from earlier in this thread.
"It runs on 5.9.6.1. I upgraded all my waves plugs to v 6.0, but if I don't keep 5.9.6.1 in my plug-ins folder, solo will not work. "
This was my experience....might depend what other waves plugs you have :-)

yes.. one year is gone faster than you can think..after that you're
not being able to open the projects you saved with the "free" plug.
you have to buy it anyway..AND then you're WUPPED !! :)

Well...what about 14 days(isn't that what a company usually gives for testing?)
I don't have any Waves on my system and I never used one. This is a first for me, that's wht I asked.
I know that many users are not happy because you have to pay an anual fee, plus this sistem V6 or whater, wich I am not familiar with.
I care less about opening projects later. One year is more than enough to record&fix a guitar part and save it as audio file...

WUP, at least for me, is not a deal breaker. Most big league plugins charge for the upgrades, WUP is just a yearly fee. The same thing really.

My "free year" mysteriously un-authorised itself halfway through a session, a session in which I'd used it quite a lot! And nothing would make it re-authorise. (Warning.. print that track to audio!)
I was of 2 minds what to do, in the week prior to the free year being announced I was going to buy it anyway, so the money was already spent in my head..
Yup, I bought it... I had others coming around to work on the session and I wanted the guitars I'd already recorded... ..but then.. later that day after the session I noticed that the upgrade to "proper" GTR3.5 was only another $40.. so they got me again!
GTR3.5 is much more of an improvement over Solo than I was expecting, so although they fleeced me of $180 (£129 in my money) I'm enjoying what I bought very much.
So, I suppose the next thing will be an in depth comparison between Eleven, Waves GTR3.5 and Amplitude, as I seem to be using them all about equally.
Nobody is more surprised than me, I use a Marshall Plexi for gigs and am quite welded to its sound, I used to consider myself the Amp snob, but I love these modellers..
... and you don't use Guitar Rig?

... and you don't use Guitar Rig?
Nope, but I certainly will try it out when I get a moment. Is the XE version representative?
So far I'm finding:
Eleven has the most realistic "feel" of the modellers I use regularly, but on the downside it's a processor hog and can get a bit noisy.
GTR3.5 is great for effected sounds, I'm getting a lot of use out of it for overdubbed textures and stabs of interest, some great clean sounds too.
Amplitude I use to double Eleven on aggressive rhythm tracks, it has a bit more bite but less tone, together they make a great double tracked big guitar sound.
-S.
A pal of mine has been playing guitar live and in the studio since the early 80's - he now runs his own studio and it's fair to say he knows his onions.
He's also a very good guitar player with knowledge of the history of electric / acoustics / amps. etc.
Which is why I mentioned Guitar Rig - he swears by it, and he auditioned the lot also along the way - arriving at GR as a favourite.
The fact that you didn't mention it was curious - it may be worthwhile checking out. Although I'm no guitar guru - I have used GR and it sounds almost indiscernible from the amps. it replicates. Very luscious, thick etc. with that nice razor-sharp top-end crispness. Very very nice. (And no, I don't work for whoever makes Guitar Rig).
Guitar Rig II, in specific, was the version he swears by.
Worth checking out, anyway.

Why would I need both Eleven and GTR? Which one is better? Eleven Rack is out now, that looks cool too? Any thoughts?

I use Waves GTR3 and like it, it's well worth the upgrade.

Second vote for GTR3.
I tend to use GTR3 for effected guitars and Eleven for more raw sounding untreated guitars.
