Fish,
If Norton is telling you the drive has Volume Bit Map errors, it's a good idea to back up your data and reinitialize the drive. A corrupted VBM can lead to files being overwritten.
As to why you're crashing: Either it's the directory corruption you've mentioned (although I think that's probably the result of the crashes, not the cause), in which case reinitializing the drive should make it go away. More likely, you've got a hardware problem -- bad or improper cabling or termination. Carefully inspect your cables for bent pins, improper seating, unusual kinks, etc.
It's also possible your 2940UW is in Ultra mode and you are on the hairy edge of the cable length limits for Ultra. If you haven't already, disable Ultra using the PowerDomain control panel for the 2940.
You may also want to consider updating HDT to version 3.0.2, which is the latest.
The 1 gig file you're seeing is the result of crashing while recording. Pro Tools will preallocate all available space on the drive and clean up the file length after the record pass has terminated. If you crash during recording, there's no way to clean up the file, so you get a file equal to the length of the remaining free space on the drive.
Keep me posted.
