I have no expertise in this area, but I can't imagine firewire to not not be practical (since its back up and not being used directly). But my actual suggestion would be perhaps the posibility of DVD-RAM? I am not aware of the costs, which may be a big factor, but just an idea to throw on the table.

My understand DVD-RAM is too slow also. My suggestion is either and AIT drive which holds up to 24GIGS at 64MB per second cost retail about $2000 or a DDS-3 which holds 12GIGS at 64MB per minute cost about $1200.
Both are sold by Glyph Technologies as a table top or rack.

I had the same issue and, after considerable research, I went with the AIT. Cost for the unit and Retrospect software was about $2300 and I am very happy with the system. 25 gig tapes sell for about $70.

FYI, I typically get 180 meg/minute transfer rates.

I am interested in AIT Plus or DLT 40/70..
Does anyone use these with the retrospect backup software and do you use any data compression (for 70 gig)?
Is data compression recommended?
I have heard it is hard to find AIT Plus cartridges right now. And AIT has recently been discontinued and replaced by AIT Plus.
I have to purchase a large format backup/archival system soon. I can't keep on backing up 10-16 Gig album projects on CDR for much longer.
