Hi,

New to Protools free full stop. interested in working with voice overs and also acoustic guitar.

I wish to use it at on a basic level of just adding reverb to mac .aif audio files . The documentation mentions a reverb plugin but I cann't find any mention of reverb within the menus etc. I can see that 'insert plugins ' has a number of effects such as normalization delay and eq but I cann't see reverb. Could someone explain if its supported and how to add reverb to a single .aif file.

Also question 2, is there a simple way of creating a stereo effect from a mono file. Nothing fancy just giving it a sense of steo ness. The docs mention ' mod delay' plug in.

Thanks in advance

There is no reverb plug-in included with the DigiRack plug-ins that come with Pro Tools FREE. There are several optional plug-ins that will work with it, though.
The PT FREE CD will have a number of demo plug-ins on it when we get them in a couple of weeks. We're going to be adding links on the website in the Products section to also download demos and audio examples. In the meantime, you can go to the Products section and look for RTAS and/or Audiosuite plug-ins there.
Check the company websites listed at the bottom of each product for downloadable demo versions. Kind of Loud, for instance, has a 7-day demo of RealVerb RTAS on their site: http://www.kindofloud.com/products/realverb.html

By the way, the DigiRack Plug-Ins that do come with Pro Tools FREE are these:
DirectConnect
Dither
Dynamics II
EQ II
Mod Delay
Invert/Duplicate
Normalize/Gain Change
Reverse/DC Removal
Time Comp-Exp/Pitch Shift

Referencing your first question about the reverb. I use PT 5.0.1 already and haven't had a chance to look at the free version. I will tonight though. If it is indeed a full version of PT, then you should be able to use Audio Suite plugs at least. DVerb, Arboretum plugs, Waves, DUY Z-room are some you might want to check out. When PT 5 first came out, DVerb was shipped free with it. If that's the case, look again. Again, I have not yet downloaded PT FREE so I could be way off.

As to your second question. Try making a duplicate copy of the mono file and put it on another track. That will give you two mono tracks. Pan one hard left, the other hard right. Now offset one of the tracks by dragging the whole file somewhere inbetween 5 milliseconds to 25 milliseconds ahead of the other track. This will give you a somewhat "stereo" type sound.

You can add a reverb plugin, but there isn't one included with the PTF package.

You may find that a good stereo 'verb will give the track the spaciousness you're after.

Someone else mentioned making a copy of the track and time slipping it relative to the original. This often works well in stereo, but can have disastrous results if your track winds up being played back in mono -- swishing sounds, "hollowness" (like being played through a cardboard tube) and bizarre EQ changes. If you use that technique, be sure to listen to the mix in mono before committing to it.

Thanks for the advice that reverb is not built into the free version.

WARNING *******************

do not try and install the. Kind of Loud,RealVerb RTS mentioned above.

It's a 3.6 meg download which doesn't work with the Pro Tools Free for Mac. It installs but when you launch Pro tools it hangs when it gets to the registering plugins startup screen at the RealVerb section. ( G4/450 loadsa RAM OS9 etc )

Reinstalling Pro Tools still causes a hang. I had to go into the system folder frind the digidesign folder and manually pullout the realverb plugin files. This caused PROtools to work agains.
SO DON"T BOTHER INSTALLING REALVERB !!!

I did a clean install of Pro Tools FREE this morning, followed by an install of the RealVerb RTAS demo, and it works fine. (I backed up and deleted the DAE Folder first before installing) All of the included presets worked as a stereo verb on the Master fader without a hitch.
It may be that you had already tried the 7 day demo at some other time, or there might be some other conflict on your system. I'm sure that it didn't work correctly on your system, but since it did work on mine, it might install and work for others. (By the way, I'm using this on a G3/500 PowerBook, with no authorizations already on the hard drive)
