How are mic and line recordings done?
Is a sound card needed? Please help!
Thanks!
What Mac are you using? If you have a G3/G4 or an imac the internal sound i/o does a pretty good job.I'm using ptf on my G3 B&W an ART tube DI. and a large diaphram condenser mic using the mac's mini plug in with great results.

I'm actually setting this up for a friend who's using a G3. I didn't know it had an internal I/O. I'm assuming that it's at the back of the CPU, right?
Anything else I need to know?
Thanks again...
If by G3 you mean a blue and white pwr mac you should have no problems. The mini plugs on the back of the computer are both stereo so if you have a small mixer or a good pre amp this will give you 2 ins 2 outs. The sound is pretty good considering. You most likely won' record a million seller with this setup, but it will give you a chance to learn the pro tools software.......If you mean a g3 desktop sorry I've had no experience with those machines.

I have a somewhat related question: I've been trying out recording with PT free using an imac's stereo in. I'm using a binaural stereo
microphone that requires "plug-in power", and so I'm using a sharp minidisc recorder basically as a preamp. I plug the mic into the MD input and send the line out to the imac miniplug. To use as a preamp, I set up the MD recorder for manual (as opposed to volume triggered) recording, so that the signal is monitored through to the line output, but I never actually record to the minidisc. My question is could this practice be harmful to the minidisc player? I could get a stereo preamp/power module that probably sounds better from sound professionals, but I haven't bothered to do this yet. Thanks!
No, ereiamjh, this practice isn't harmful to the minidisc player. I use this practice when I adjust de gain input (for record a set played on the turntables). You can use it, no problems!

Thanks for the quick reply, ruff. I guess I won't worry about getting something better immediately. It seems that technology and device support for imac (usb and firewire, no PCI) is changing very rapidly right now. I am thinking about the tascam us-428, but it seems waiting a bit to buy an interface may be the best course of action.

Hey all,
Check out

I'm interested in recording live audio via some magical USB device > the new iBook.
Having a hard time finding any USB devices that fully meet my criteria (1/4" I/O, digital I/O, etc). Where can I find some helpful USB/Audio info?
Anyone know anything about Firewire and audio in?? Is that happening yet?
Thanks for your time.

The short answer: No. images/icons/frown.gif
However the 828 comes with Audiodesk, MOTU's audio editing software. You might be able to record with the 828 then import the files into PTF. images/icons/confused.gif
