I discovered a few things about getting PT Free to run on Windows I'd like to share.
Turn off not just all other unnecessary apps but also HARDWARE!. the best way to do this is to make a separate hardware profile. I know , it's one of those scary Windows things that most people never want to go near, myself included, but it works like a charm, I just did it for the first time and it seems to do the trick. I've been up and running for 2 hours now, without a glitch, running plug ins live, all 8 tracks, etc. Yesterday all I did was crash and burn almost every time..
I created a hardware profile, called it "Pro Tools", and went into device manager, checking the box "turn off device in this hardware profile" box for my scanner, network card, zip and Jaz drive. Now I boot up, and when prompted, choose HW profile "protools" when I feel like using PTFree, and my system is configured for maximum compatibility.
My system:
400 Pentium II
Windows ME (painless upgrade, necessary, 45 bucks, do it)
128 ram (must have)
