View Full Version : USB Latency and Pro Tools midi

I am currently waiting for my Mix+ setup to arrive and I am little worried after reading about USB midi latency issues. I plan on using a MOTU MTP AV USB midi interface on my G4 and was going to attempt to use the Pro Tools midi functions for sequencing instead of another program. I guess I really have 2 questions:
1. Will the midi timing be good enough to use for commercial projects?
2. Is the midi implementation of Pro Tools robust enough to actually compose music (my primary job), or should I invest in Logic or something for sequencing? I do realize Pro Tools midi is lacking some features, but I was hoping I could get by.
Thanks,
Will

I would recommend the AMT-8 interface by Emagic. It seems to be the best of the USB inferfaces.
The Protools sequencer is fine, but if you pland on doing more complex programming i woud recommend getting Logic. You can run logic slaved to Protools in your computer via midi machine control if you want the best of both worlds.

I agree with the above as far as the sequencer goes. It is good but, not anywhere near logic's complexity, which can be good and bad at some times. I also reccommend the AMT-8 or Unitor 8 if you need the SMPTE option however I would not connect through USB. There is some delay and it is drastically less when connecting with serial. AMT's and Unitor's have both serial and USB connections all you have to do is put a stealth port by G-three tech. in your G4. Hopefully you don't use your modem because it will be pulled out to add this serial port.

I just checked out the Stealth serial port. I think that'll be the way I go instead of USB. Even with the MOTU interface I can connect with the serial port. Thanks for the advice.

I have the USB Motu XT and it has never given me one problem and I have run 5 lines with about 10 channels on each line. the latency I do not think can be avoided because when recorded audio produced from PT midi, there will always be a 256 Millisecond delay.

I have a Griffin G4port, this adds a serial port to your G4, I use it with the Emagic Unitor MKII interface, which will do either serial or USB, I chose to go the serial route for stability of timing. I have a spare G4port if interested, I would sell it for $40
