Mid-region fades

I'm a new user, convert from Deck/SE, please forgive the question if it's too basic: Can a fade be executed mid-region, or must I use change to volume control view and alter manually?
Also, I only seem to be able to change among waveform/volume/pan/mute views when window is first "small", i.e. changing views not available unless view is small. What am I missing?

Either you must cut the region in the middle and make the fade on the waveform, or you enable automation and record or write the fader movement to create the fade.

Of course the views choises are available in all "sizes", they just cange places a little. Look for the small triangles!
