I found a file splitter application called RZsplit at www.killersoftware.com (http://www.killersoftware.com) that allows for multi gig files to be split. I have taken to zipping the song folders and using this app to split it to 650 meg files so that I can make backups of songs periodically. (also on this site is a "cleantray" application which helped me easily manage my windows system tray and free up a lot of system resources).

Does anyone know if there is a way to delete unwanted unused wav files from the audio folder automatically? Premiere Video does this, but I could not find a way to automatically do that in protools. Would make things a lot easier as some of my songs are about 2 gig zipped.

At least now I can back this stuff up easily without the need for a tape drive.

If your session is complete and you dont want to go back to nay hidden region areas, you can select all the regions, then perform "compact" on them ( from the region list window). This will clear some audio out tha has been cut out or masked during editing. Also stuffit deluxe has a droplet program called dropsegment will also split files- and its a fairly standard program to have and use. You can configrue it to split them into any size you want- and you can make them self expanding.

I usually use "consolidate regions" on a track-by-track basis when I'm done (or close to done) mixing, then delete all but the 24 files.

Have you ever tried Retrospect for backup. It automatically spans CDs when backing up. No muss, no fuss, and it's only about $50.

Read the manual about "compacting files". Basically, as the other users stated, you have to select the unused regions, remove them from the session, then compact the remaining regions. Be sure to "remove" the files first and not "delete" or you may erase references to regions in the session. Good Luck-
