Hey guys --

Im new to the system (and this board). I'm currently employed as an associate at a local (large) grocery chain - but I'm really an actor at heart. I'm trying to take advantage of this system for that very reason. I'm planning on using a PowerMac G4 system w/ the Digi001 Audio I/O interface to record a series of live improvs and other sketches to send to various agencies (in NYC and here in my state). I think this type of demo reel would make a dazzling impression on these guys, and so I want to do a great job with my setup. I'm *planning* on using the TLM series of Neumann studio mics to record the vocals. From what I understand, these use the standard XLR (3-pin) style of cable. DigiDesign claims to have two of these types of analog inputs on the Digi001 interface, but they don't appear (on the photo) to accept this type of 3-pin cable. For those of you who are using Digi001, is this the case, or do these type of XLR-connected mics work just fine?

If none of you are using Neumann mics or the TLM series, what mics ARE you using and what are your results with them?

Thanx for answering this question; I'm new to this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Love and Best Wishes,
JASON FRAZIER

Hi Jason, and welcome to the board. images/icons/wink.gif

The answer to your first question is YES, actually Digi001 has two XLR inputs in the front panel, if you can't recognize them is because they also accept the 1/4" TRS in the same input, you can connect whatever you want. Apart from these two frontal inputs, there are 6 other in the back, but these ones only TRS 1/4" (classic stereo/mono jack).

So there is no problem connecting your mic into digi001.

To answer your second question, word around the campfire says that TLM103 is a very good and affordable vocal mic. Go for it ! images/icons/smile.gif

I did two a/b tests with my TLM 103 and my 414B-ULS using different vocalists. So far, it's been no contest. I'm about to put my 414 back in it's box.

I still like the 414 for acoustic guitar, however.

Hi Jason,

Besides the TLM103, check out the Shure KSM44. I A/B'd these two mics and loved both of them. Though the TLM103 sounded a tad richer.

The reasons I chose the KSM44 follows:
...less expensive
...includes shockmount
...rugged flight/storage case
...3 polar patterns-cardioid, figure 8 & omni

Yet, I do plan on adding the TLM103 next year.

Have fun, Jim

I know it's not traditional, but the AKG D-112 actually makes a pretty good vocal mic.

Hi Jason,

Another good vocal mic is the Rode NT1000 which has been favourably compared to the TLM103 and is considerably less money. While the shockmount is extra, I learned from a friend in California that he got the NT1000 and shockmount for under $300. If you combine it with an inexpensive, but decent preamp/processor like the dbx286A I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the sonic quality and for both pieces you probably won't spend as much as you would for just the TLM 103.

Good Luck images/icons/smile.gif

Guys --

Thanx very much for all your comments and recommendations; I'm taking them all into account. Oddly enough, the TLM103 was the exact "TLM Series" mic I had in mind, but I think that runs for about $800 *not quite sure*
so thanx for the other mics you mentioned. Cost is definitely an issue, so it's at the forefront of my mind. (I'm not Donald Trump, but I do make some green...) When I do get everything set up (and have recorded a few tracks), I'd like to send you guys a copy for your personal review; just let me know. I appreciate everyone's response, and the fact that you cared enough to write is enough alone. Thanx you again for the recommendations and best wishes!

Sincerely,
JASON FRAZIER

Musicians Friend has the TLM 103 with an SG103 swivelmount and a wooden case for $699.99 in their catalog now for one of their sales.

You can't go wrong with the TLM103, but if you can audition both, listen to that Rode NT1000!

Here is some "bang for your buck".

I just baught an SE 1000 from Bay View Pro Audio and it sounds amazing, I got that and an SE1 for $179.00, it makes a great adition to your collection. (those guys are great to do business with too)

Also you might want to try the AKG C1000 its a great mic too.
