I bought my son one of the brand new MacBooks, and he gave me his iMac. He installed Snow Leopard (clean install) on this iMac (he didn't know I was buying PT 7.4.2 that same day; the OS Tiger disk had been long lost).
In installing 7.4.2, I experienced many error messages that ended the install. Then on the PT7 disc I found an update or something, and once that was installed, I was able to "open" PT in Snow Leopard. But even though I can open the program, I cannot get past the "Not an audio volume" error message. I can open Workspace from the file menu running on top of the screen, and I cannot get the hard drive to appear in the Workspace browser, meaning I cannot change the volume to a Record status. Is this normal? Am I correct in assuming these errors are because of Snow Leopard? (I am using an original MBox - another son is using PT and gave me the MBox when he upgraded) I am footing the bill for a lot of my son's technology, so i am short on cash, and I just want a lite DAW that I can make guitar loops on. Thanks; this place rocks. |

Well your problem stems from both 7.4.2 and the original MBox. The only versions that "should" work on Snow Leopard are 8.x. There is a pre-release available for SL with varying degrees of sucess. Some say 8.0cs3 works better, however. Also, the original MBox reached it's end of service support, and won't be supported at all for use on Snow Leopard. So, unfortunately, if you expect to get any real use out of Pro Tools on Snow Leopard you will need to upgrade both hardware and software.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. Snow Leopard is the problem for me. I will acquire the OS X Leopard 10.5.4 disc and try that. The MBox will work for me just a few hours each week, yes? :)

Yes, you shouldn't have any problems with 7.4.2 on 10.5.4.

BTW, I received my Pro Tools 7.4.2 software in new condition (never opened); it has a bundle of BOmb Factory plug-ins that need authorization. Problem is, PT is looking for an iLok key as authorization.
I use an MBox original...is there any way to unlock those plugins WITHOUT buying an Mbox2 with an iLok? Much appreciated, WCO33 |

The included Bomb Factory plugins do not need an iLok to work. There are some Bomb Factory plugins on the disk that need to be purchased to get the iLok authorizations to work. The fact that they are on the CD does not mean you have purchased them. It is just a convenient way to distribute them if and when you choose to purchase them. An iLok key is about $40.00 so it may be a good investment if you intend to use more 3rd party plugins in the future. You do not need to purchase an Mbox2.

Thank you for your reply, Obsidian Dragon.
Purchase them through Avid's site? Thanks again, WCO33 |
