"Unable to Communicate" fix?

On my HD2/G5 system with C|8, I would get the "protools unable to communicate with command|8. Power cycle and check its connections" sometimes several times daily. I would eventually have to re-launch Pro Tools or even re-boot to make it stop. Apparently, this is not uncommon among C|8 users.

Well one day I lost communication and couldn't get it back. The C|8 was not recognized in the Peripherals/Midi Controllers menu. I tried all kinds of things, including re-installing the firmware. But what worked was double-clicking on the file: Applications/Digidesign/Pro Tools/Controllers/Command.8 bundle. This launched Pro Tools. Not only did it re-establish communication but it has since only lost communication once in the past month (which was re-established thru power cycling). So it's much more stable now. Hmmm. Any explanations?
